Vampire Art!

I was asked by Jasmine Becket Griffith to contribute a few pieces to her new book coming out, called Vampire Art Now. I can't tell you how excited I was to get an email asking for ME to contribute some pieces. I'm by no means guaranteed a spot in the book, but it was an incredible honour to be considered. Let's just hope I get it!

Like a lot of us artists out there trying to make a career out of our passion, I think we have to deal with a lot of feelings of inadequacy when it seems like we're not getting anywhere with our art. Personally, I've been very busy at school. While I am in design and illustration, I don't really get to create artwork that suits me and my style. Everything I'm learning about involves communicating a message, selling a product, showing some meaning and witty idea.

I'm more of an "aesthetics" person. I like to make things look pretty, as silly as it sounds.
I love developing stories, places, characters, fashions - and illustrating it.

So in the end, I'm left feeling a little bit empty. I don't have the time I'd like to sit and create fantasy artwork because I'm WAY too busy with projects from school. I have a vision of what I want to be, and sometimes it's in conflict with what we're doing in this program. I'm determined, however, to stick it out, and learn everything I can and twist it to my own ends... to suit my path.

Anyway, here's some recent-ish art, enjoy (but don't steal):

Long time no see!

It's been a long time since my last journal!

I've been extremely busy at school, working pretty much 12 hours + a day and on weekends, to get my homework done-sky.

Now that I'm in second year, we've moved into a lot more design-oriented projects. Everyone in the class received their own 27 inch Imacs, Wacom Intuos 4 tablet, and Adobe CS5 program.

And oh my gosh has its been a learning curve! I thought I knew photoshop! Really, everything's just blowin' my mind.

Anyway, the main point of this update is to let you all know (those interested in the Fantasy Artbook Project), that I'm steadily learning everything I need to know to put it together professionally. I'm learning all about creating books and brochures in Adobe InDesign, as well as Typography and Marketing & Advertising. I'm a busy girl!

I'd like to start accepting art submissions to move this process along. Do any of you know a good website where big image files can be exchanged/sent? Let me know! :)

How have you guys been?

Faeries = Insects? Yes!!

A little monochromatic purple fae.

The instructor told us to draw an insect with ink and lay a wash of one colour over top. I am super sneaky and painted a faerie  and claimed her to be an insect. The teacher didn't object in the slightest, which was awesome :]

Gettin' Crafty in the Kitchen - Resin Pendants

Resin things seem to be all the rage lately, especially with Etsians.

My mother and I got interested in this whole 'Resin' phenomenon, went to our nearest Michael's, and picked up nearly all supplies needed. Strangely enough, our Michael's didn't sell Resin molds. We were quite surprised and disappointed because we didn't want to have to wait and order molds online. Then I suggested we go to IKEA and get one of their rubbery icecube molds. My mom really liked the heart shape, so that's what we settled on for our trial batch of resin pendants.

And without further ado, here are the Strawberry Pink Resin Hearts:

The pendants are set in a flower formation here, on top of - yes - polkadot underwear.
They were a gift from family; I really liked the pattern, but sadly they were sized xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx small. LOL.
Now they serve as a colourful backdrop ;)

February Update!

It's been several months since my last update. I hope you've all had a wonderful Christmas/New Years/Celebrations!

I'm SO incredibly busy at school 24/7, working on art & design projects (unfortunately none relating to fantasy art atm). Because of that, my art business has been on hiatus for a while. But... if things go my way, I'll be showing at the Portobello West Market this year!

I've been testing out my new Nikon d60 camera (part of my school supplies). I quite like how this photo turned out and wanted to share it. I think it truly represents the constant cover of rain & cloud that is Vancouver.

Next post will be on something new I'm cooking up..... [:

I figured it was time to make an entry!

I'm still alive, working lots, painting when I have free time... You know, all that fun "life" stuff :P Here's one of my recent illustrations...

Dinner and a Show

Also, the artbook is still a go. I hope you're all working away at your submissions! I will send out info when I plan to start accepting hi-res image submissions from everyone. Don't worry too much about this, as submissions won't be due for quite a while. I have a rough date of when I'd like to get them all in, probably around the end of June, and the latest would be August of 2010.

I have a plan for "making" the book. In second year, aka September 2010, I'm going to be in my second year in my illustration program. I will have my own little cubical & top of the line apple computer all to myself. I will also have photoshop CS4. So basically I'm going to put it together there. Design it there... etc... I'll also ask my teachers for advice on publication. Together, my artists and I, will decide where to proceed once the book is finished being put together and everyone has seen it. That's my plan :)

I will paste this mini update on FAE & on my Dev Art so that everyone will have an opportunity to read this.

Hows your summer going?

Fantasy Artbook Project

Guide to the Unnatural World - Fantasy Artbook Collaboration

These are four demo pages of the artbook that I have put together to share my vision of the finished project with you all.

  • I'm looking for about ten pieces per artist (possibly more). The pieces can be old and new as long as they fit the categories.
  • Time frame is about a year.
  • The book is split into chapters that have themes. Each artist draws a character or creature fitting the chapter's theme. Backgrounds are welcome though not obligatory.
  • Themes/Chapters:
    a) Whispers From Beyond: Spirits, Ghosts, Ghouls, Vampires, Demons
    b) Creatures of the Deep: Mermaids, Sirens, Selkies, etc..
    c) Winged Things: Faeries, Pixies, Harpies} of dark and light. (and other winged humanoids)
    d) Enchanted Beasts: Unicorns, Fawns, Centaurs, Dragons, etc..
    e) Whimsical Woods: Dryads, Elves, Gnomes, Goblins
    f) Magical Humans: (lame title lol... suggestions?) Witches, Seers, Steampunks, etc... anything your heart desires.
  • I will tweak each piece (cropping, blurring edges etc..) to make them have unity with the rest of the images.I will also choose which pieces I want to use and which I don't (if any).
  • Traditional and Digital art are both perfectly acceptable. No photography or sculpture.
  • Credit: Everyone will be credited. I'll probably make an index in the back.
  • Money: Any money made will be split equally between the artists.
  • Writing: Let me know if you would like to write the short bit beside your character. This will be done last (so I'll discuss more of what I'm looking for when the time comes).
  • Publishing: We'll pitch it to a bunch of publishers and then if that doesn't work we will self publish and promote it ourselves. We will also make a website.

Current Artists:

Kelly Angel
Melissa Dalton
Erin Kerr
Linzi Sayles
Tiffany Tolland
Monika Ptok-Byard
Rebecca Brogden
Therese L. Davis
Carol Ochs

Anyone else? :) Questions, comments, suggestions?

Hello friends!

It's been a while since my last entry. Lots of news!

Firstly, I just finished my two interviews for two very prestigious programs at my university; the first, was Interactive Design (site design, some programming, making images in ps) and the second was IDEA, an illustration and graphic design program. Well, good news! I was accepted to interactive design! I have no idea yet about IDEA lol, so I'm awaiting the letter of hope/doom.

Now that I've had some free time to paint what I want to paint I've felt a lot more creative. Here is my newest watercolour painting. It's a small 5x7 inch watercolor on coldpress. I call her Princess of Birds or Princess Bird.
